Art After Philosophy
1. Formalist art is artwork thats value is determined by the way it’s made (the form), visual aspects, and its medium.
3. I think what Kosuth’s means by saying, “morphology of traditional art” in relation to conceptual art is that conceptual art is started from traditional art still, but with conceptual art it is taking it to the next level when evaluating the concept, where as traditional art was more simplistic. Conceptual art is a morphed version of traditional art.
5. I agree with Kosuth stating, “Formalist critics and artists alike do not question the nature of art, but as I have said elsewhere: being an artist now means to question the nature of art.” I believe this is truthful as well, “Art ‘lives’ through influencing other art, not by existing as the physical residue of an artist’s ideas.” I find that very truthful in my work as well as many others. I also agree with, “A work of art is a tautology in that it is a presentation of the artist’s intention, that is, he is saying that that particular work of art is art, which means, is a definition of art.” I agree with a lot of his theories and that they are relevant to a lot of artists today.
6. I think it means that past artwork is where traditional art comes from.
9. Kosuth is trying to define what is art today and how we should understand it.
11. Analytic propositions provide no information about anything, it is just a presentation of the artist’s intention and what the artist says the work is. Synthetic propositions are “verifiable by the world, that is to say, to understand these propositions one must leave the tautological-like framework of art and consider “outside” information.”
13. “Art’s only claim for art is art. Art is the definition of art.”
